Case Studies for Monitoring Based Commissioning

Building operation is a critical component of energy efficiency that is often difficult to track and keep in check over time. Monitoring based commissioning (MBCx) uses data available from building automation systems along with software tools to identify operational efficiency opportunities and keep a building running well. This presentation will provide an in depth look at using an automated fault detection and diagnostic (FDD) software tool to optimize building operation. Specific case studies will be presented including actions identified and verified results.

The panel discussion will focus on the challenges and benefits of using rating systems, such as LEED, to guide the decision making process. Specifically it will address the trade-offs between spending resources using a formal rating system versus investing the resources directly into the building, and which types of projects are better suited for each choice. The panel includes representatives from all life cycle phases of a building: design, construction, & operation.
CU Recreation Center Case Study: Refrigeration Heat Recovery

This session will explore the innovative refrigeration heat recovery at the CU-Boulder Recreation Center Renovation & Expansion. The project renovated the existing 215,000-square-foot Recreation Center and added 93,000 square feet, and has remained target to receive LEED Platinum certification. One aspect of the project was the ice rink refrigeration heat recovery loop which heats two swimming pools, domestic hot water, and other loads. The updated Recreation Center is projected to have an energy use intensity of 35 kBTU/sf/yr, representing more than a 70% decrease in energy use on a per-square-foot basis compared to before the renovation and realize an energy cost savings of 43% (approximately $300,000 annually).

Trends, Measurements/Observations and Projections on climate change will be presented from the latest Working Group Reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Also included in the presentation will be recommendations on implementing each of the 7 CO2 Stabilization Wedges developed by Socolow & Pacala.
Creating a Competitive Advantage with ASHRAE’s bEQ Program

If we are serious about creating a more sustainable world, increasing market share and increasing revenues, we need to develop a competitive advantage. Understanding the underpinnings of our industry help firms craft a competitive advantage using bEQ. This session will explore the ways of using the bEQ program to create value for clients and create a competitive advantage in the market by using bEQ to assist in the client’s decision making process.
What's Hot in Sustainability - Going from AEDGs to Net-Zero and Beyond

This session will highlight the incorporation the Advanced Energy Design Guides with the integrated design approach for achieving 30%, 50% and Net-Zero Energy facilities. Actual project examples with proven performance records of 18+ months will be presented. These example projects have various energy goals (e.g. 30%, 50% & Net-Zero).
About the presenters:
Terry E. Townsend, P.E., ASHRAE Fellow, LEED AP, of Townsend Engineering, Inc. served as 2006-2007 ASHRAE Society President, focusing on the ASHRAE Promise: A Sustainable Future. His achievements as president include launching ASHRAE’s first ever certification program, accelerating and expanding the Advanced Energy Design Guide series, setting more stringent savings for ASHRAE’s energy standard, and proving resources on how ASHRAE can minimize the environmental impact of ASHRAE meetings.
Tim Wentz, P.E., ASHRAE Fellow, HBDP, Associate Professor at University of Nebraska, Lincoln, was installed as ASHRAE Society Treasure at the 2014 Annual Conference. Tim spent 19 years in the industry, working on a wide range of mechanical projects through the Midwest. Since entering academia Prof. Wentz has received numerous awards and honors for his teaching and service to the HVAC industry. He is the recipient of the E.K. Campbell Award of Merit, a Region IX Regional Award of Merit, a Region IX Chapter President of the Year and a Regional Energy Award. The Mechanical Contractors Association of America (MCAA) has named Tim their national “Educator of the Year” award on three occasions and in 2009 awarded Tim its highest honor, the Distinguished Service Award. Tim has received the Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction’s Outstanding Educator Award and the College of Engineering’s Holling Award for outstanding teaching and mentoring.
Celeste Cizik, PE, CEM, LEED-AP, with Group14 Engineering, has a wide range of experience in building systems and energy engineering including retro-commissioning, energy analysis, mechanical system design, and energy planning. She has conducted energy projects at facilities and campuses across the country and has led energy training through the Federal Energy Management Program. She has a degree in Architectural Engineering from the University of Colorado-Boulder and an MBA from the University of Colorado Leeds School of Business.
Rick Osbaugh, P.E., LEED AP BD+C, a true innovator in the industry, helps The RMH Group remain positioned at the forefront of low-energy mechanical system design. He has been designing low-energy-use systems for more than 30 years and has garnered international attention for this work as early as 1983 for his design of an office building in Lakewood, Colorado. He recently developed innovative design solutions for the University of Colorado, Boulder Recreation Center which included indirect direct evaporative cooling and a custom refrigeration system that uses heat rejected from the ice rink refrigeration system to heat the two swimming pools and other heating loads. Rick holds a BS in mechanical engineering from the University of Colorado Boulder.
