Presentation: Heat Pump Performance Beyond Seasonal Efficiency Ratings
As the HVAC industry shifts rapidly toward electrification, engineers are increasingly tasked with predicting the real-world performance of advanced heat pump systems. However, a significant hurdle remains: traditional rating metrics like IEER, SEER2, HSPF2, and COP provide only a snapshot of performance under highly specific, idealized conditions.
This presentation explores why these single-point and seasonal averages are insufficient for granular energy modeling—especially in the variable climates of the Rocky Mountain region. We will dive into the "data desert" faced by design engineers and how the lack of comprehensive performance maps (covering a full range of part load and ambient temperature conditions) leads to significant uncertainty in utility cost and carbon emission projections. We will describe how ASHRAE Standard 205 provides a framework to digitize and standardize the high-resolution performance maps required for modern building energy modeling and what design engineers can do to help promote adoption of the standard.

Neal Kruis is Vice President at Big Ladder Software with 20 years of experience in building energy modeling, including the development of the EnergyPlus whole-building physics simulation engine. He is the Board President of IBPSA-USA, the contracted Energy Modeling Director for RESNET, and an active member in ASHRAE Technical and Standards Committees, including as the Vice Chair of ASHRAE Standard 205, "Representation of Performance Data for HVAC&R and Other Facility Equipment".
