Presentation: Mastering IAQ: The 5Ws and H Decoded

Outdoor air pollution is caused by both natural and man-made sources.  Natural disasters, such as wildfires, and human-induced sources, such as industrial and vehicular emissions strongly determine the outdoor air quality.  As we spend more than 90% of our life in some form of enclosed environment or the other, it is even more crucial to acknowledge that the outdoor air quality has a tremendous impact on the Indoor Air Quality (IAQ).  IAQ is further exacerbated by indoor sources of contaminants, including airborne pathogens and  the  Covid-19 pandemic has been a catalyst in raising the overall awareness of IAQ in the world.  IAQ is both an art and science, and mastering it needs an integrated and holistic approach.  The 5W1H framework, as shown below, is used in this presentation to critique, analyse and understand the complexities of IAQ to achieve the highest levels of IAQ for the comfort, health and wellbeing of all.

    • WHAT is the right approach?
    • WHY is it important to start from the very beginning?
    • WHO is responsible for ensuring good IAQ?
    • HOW can good IAQ be achieved?
    • WHEN should IAQ be assessed?
    • WHERE should IAQ be assessed?
