Another Heat Pump Panel: Because Technology Keeps Improving

Energy market transformation is happening, and technology keeps improving. Hear from designers, manufacturers and an energy modeler the latest on heat pumps in Denver’s climate. From challenges to strategies, and an update on 2025 Denver Energy Code requirements.

Jeff Elsner is a mechanical engineer and project manager with extensive experience with central utility plants, higher education campuses,  healthcare facilities, laboratories, data centers, and office buildings.  Sustainable, energy and emissions conscious design has been an emphasis throughout this broad practice and especially in planning for low carbon district energy.  Jeff also has special expertise in heat pump applications and energy dispatch modeling.  He is a LEED associate, member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and the International District Energy Association (IDEA). Jeff is based in Denver Colorado and earned a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from Colorado State University.

Libby is a Professional Engineer with over seven years of experience in the building energy sector. She provides energy-efficiency and decarbonization consulting services to a variety of building types, ranging from multifamily to public services. She works closely with design teams and owners to establish operational energy and carbon goals that align with each project’s specific needs and constraints. As a recognized expert in energy codes, including the IECC and various state programs, Libby conducts training sessions to help teams stay updated on evolving requirements.

Ken Urbanek, PE, LEED AP, HBDP. Ken serves as the Client Executive overseeing IMEG’s Denver Office, where he is responsible for guiding all Denver-based projects to successful delivery. Ken has a broad design and construction background that has been focused on high-performance sustainable building design. His specific expertise includes, but is not limited to, multi-discipline project management, central utility plants, campus distribution systems, radiant cooling systems, chilled beams, under-floor air distribution, optimized variable air systems, variable refrigerant flow systems, smoke control systems, and black/grey water systems.

Geoff McBride has worked in the HVAC Industry for 20 years. In 2006-2008, worked for Mitchell Mechanical, Inc in Seattle, WA (Residential & Light Commercial HVAC Install contractor).  Primary role was business development. 2008-2010 worked for Water Furnace International representing water source & geothermal heat pump technology (territory of AK, WA, OR, ID, MT) to commercial HVAC contractors.  Primary role was business development & education/application of product. 2010-2014 worked for Bosch Thermotechnology (Bosch’s HVAC division).  Also represented water source & geothermal heat pump technology (territory West coast Reps from Denver to West coast USA) to commercial HVAC contractors.  Primary role was business development & education/application of product. 2014-2019 worked for Daikin North America representing VRV/F water & air source.  Territory included NM, AZ, CO & WY.  Primarily responsible for helping LONG Building Technologies sales engineers design & implement Daikin VRV/F systems while expanding the commercial VRV/F Daikin market share in Colorado & Wyoming. 2019 to present works for LONG Building Technologies as a sales engineer.  Territory includes CO & WY.  Cover all mechanical contractors & engineers, helping to design and implement VRV/F systems for commercial applications. Has trained extensively in water source & ground source heat pumps and VRV/F water source & air source heat pump & heat recovery systems. Has accreditation in Solar PV systems, IGSHPA & VRV/F Design & Applications.

Rebecca Reel, PE, BEMP, LEED AP BD+C, RESET AP, is a plans review engineer on the energy team for the City and County of Denver. She supports buildings that are highly efficient, renewably powered, grid flexible and smart. Prior to joining Denver she gained a breadth of experience with commercial buildings including mechanical system design, energy modeling, sustainability consulting, smart building software platform implementation and operation.

Naomi Saliman, PE, LEED AP, is a Mechanical/Plumbing plans review engineer for the City and County of Denver. She works as part of a multi-discipline Energy Champions Team within CPD working to develop and address energy related concerns of the Denver Energy Code (DEC). Naomi has over 15 years of experience working in the Denver metro area as a mechanical design engineer prior to joining Denver’s CPD. She has designed a wide variety of commercial buildings and worked closely with design professionals, contractors, and owners.

Mike Filler is a Regional Sustainable Systems Commercialization Manager with Trane Technologies, based in Colorado Springs. In this role, he supports Trane account managers and their customers with several subject areas: including decarbonization, thermal storage, heat recovery, heat pumps & refrigerants. Mike has decades of experience with chilled water, thermal storage and heat recovery products & applications. He also has experience with energy modeling of high-performance HVAC systems. Mike volunteers with ASHRAE technical committees and his local chapter Board of Governors. He holds a PE license in Colorado and is ASHRAE Certified as a High-performance Building Design Professional (HBDP).
